In my experience as a teacher in Chile, the common factor that I could find about what teachers need was time. My colleagues and I were always talking and complying about the amount of time that we have to reflect or even look to new approaches of teaching. The answer was on: we do not have time to do something else beside planning our lessons or talking with parents. As Bill Ferriter establish “teachers rarely get to self-select learning opportunities, pursue professional passions or engage in meaningful, ongoing conversation about instructions”.
Now, how blogs and Wikis can help to solve this problem? Ferriter founds an amazing possibility through these tools to improve teacher´s learning. Blogs and wikis are amazing tools that can be used to reflect about our teaching and also to make collaborative learning. As teacher we can create our own blogs about our experience with student, about problem that we are concern about or simple submit some article that we will like to share. Also, we can follow some blogs to learn about other teaching experiences.
In my opinion this moment of reflection is extremely necessary in order to improve our teaching. The possibility of learning about other with just one click is something that we cannot let it go. I made an exercise to count the amount of time that I check my email every day. It is probably more than 5 times per day. How about if I expend the same time but checking different blogs of teachers?
“Blogs become a forum for public articulation- and public articulation is essential for educators interested in refining and revising their thinking about teaching and learning.”
When I started my experience as an international student at Bank Street I thought that it will be necessary to me to write and reflect around my experience and one of the ideas that I decide to do was to write a blog. It does not have a first article but after reading this article I will put my hands to work on it.
